SCRATCH IT

Scratch it is an interactive art installation about information, art and society. An environment is created where the users can “scratch the surface” to access projected video footage. The installation serves as a metaphor for our quest to get information, to understand a place, a people or an idea.

Is it possible to reveal “the bigger picture”?

The Installation is composed of a series of interviews with Cuban media-artists, living in Cuba. Outside of Cuba, visitors of the installation are invited to use Cuban coins to scratch off a layer of paint, hiding the footage, to view the information. Each visitor uncovers an area, some leave a message, but ultimately all work together to uncover the full picture. The more is uncovered, the louder the voices of the Cuban artists get, making the information more and more incomprehensible. The initial silence turns into an unintelligible noise of information, experiences, opinions, …

The footage is  projected on a big screen, covered with a black rub-off surface hiding the interviews. Only when people scratch off the surface, they reveal the projection, infra-red light passes through the screen and the sound starts to increase.  The technical system consists of  LEDs directed on the surface of the screen. Behind the screen a camera connected to a computer, equipped with a camera tracking software, analyses the amount of infrared light coming through the designated area of each interview and rises progressively its sound. As a result of the visitor’s interaction a new artwork is produced every time the installation is exhibited.
